The Lowry houses two theatres:

The Lyric Theatre - 1730 seats The proscenium stage is England's largest stage outside London. Seating on 3 levels - stalls, dress circle and upper circle - arranged to ensure the closest possible relationship between audience and performers ·

The Quays Theatre - an adaptable theatre with 466 seats Seating on 3 levels but in a courtyard form. Staging and seating can be adjusted to suit proscenium, thrust, promenade, traverse and in-the-round performances of drama, dance, chamber opera, recitals and cabaret.

The Programme - The adaptable theatre is a venue for smaller-scale theatre, dance and concert performances that are suited to the size of the auditorium and its variable layouts. This space is also a focus for educational projects and will regularly present community and youth work. The programme in The Lowry's two theatre spaces will include a full range of drama, opera, ballet, dance, musicals, children's shows, popular music, jazz, folk and comedy. The programme content will be both international and local, including co-productions with major producing theatres, festivals and themed seasons. Highlights of the Spring 2000 season will be announced when the box office opens in Autumn 1999. In addition, the Plaza, immediately in front of The Lowry will provide opportunities to present exciting outdoor entertainment.

Location - The Lowry is set at the heart of Salford Quays, just one and half miles from Manchester city centre. The Lowry is located on Pier 8, flanked by the Manchester Ship Canal on two sides and over-looking a magnificent open-air Plaza on the third. Future developments fronting the Plaza include the Digital World Centre and the Manchester Outlet Mall, a designer outlet, leisure, health and restaurant destination, incorporating a Warner Village Cinema, plus a hotel and apartments all due to open in 2001. A spectacular lifting footbridge across the canal links The Lowry to Trafford Wharfside, Manchester United Football Club and the site of the Imperial War Museum - North

Oulton Park is an excellent venue with big crowds who can get some of the feel of racing not found at other venues. It's easy to find and worth any travelling distance. The latter part of the 1999 season saw the opening of the Jackie Stewart centre overlooking Knickerbrook, the erection of a Grandstand together with higher and improved safety fencing and together with a broad gravel trap at Lodge corner. The recent changes have continued Oulton Parks stature on the British circuit racing scene and we would go so far as to say it's now one of the premier race circuits the UK has to offer.

Britain's Only Salt Museum

Cheshire has been a centre of the salt industry for some 2,000 years and today it is the only place in Britain where salt is produced on a large scale. The Salt Museum, housed in the old Northwich Workhouse, tells the fascinating story of this unique industrial heritage. Videos, models, old photographs, paintings and traditional working tools will help the whole family discover a completely new side to something we all take for granted. Mining, working conditions, subsidence, transport history and much more will come alive. Educational Service A tailored service is provided to all groups, which may include guided walks, hands on science and living history sessions.
